Child Care Advice from the Experts

Should I place my children in a day care center, or hire a nanny?

When deciding on the best child care for your family, write down the pros and cons of each option. Do a little homework, and the better solution for your situation will be clear.

If finances are a primary consideration, day care is usually the way to go for a family with one child. When there are 2 or more children, or a child with special needs, fees for a center or a nanny are comparable. Sometimes two families will "nanny-share" to reduce each family's burden.

How often are your children usually sick? How many days on average are children absent due to illness at the day care you are considering? Visit the school between 5 and 6pm, so you can have the opportunity to chat with other parents.

Think about your back-up plan for school closings, snow days, sick childcare. What will you do if the day care calls you at work at 10am, and reports a fever, requiring you to leave work and take your child home. Do you have family who can pitch in? Does your employer offer this flexibility? Families who employ nannies do not face this issue.

When you hire a nanny, especially if you work with an agency, you should receive a complete portfolio on each applicant. Ask the school if you can review the perspective care givers credentials, including her references from previous employers, and criminal record reports. Did she have a pre-employment physical and drug screening?

What educational training do the caregivers have? Are they first aid and CPR certified?

How far away is the center? If you opt for a day care center, what time will you and the children need to wake up to prepare for the day? If you have a nanny, what time will you need to wake up to prepare for the day? (The kids can awake on their own schedule, and nap on their schedule as well.)

Most importantly, what is your gut telling you? Do you have a 3 year old who needs socialization skills? Do you have infant twins who you'd prefer to not have to bundle up each morning for day care? Do you have school aged children who need a ride to and from private school, as well as care on school closings? Each family is different, and each family's needs are different. As long as your decision is made with your heart, your gut and
your head, you will come to the best decision for your family.
