to consider before and during
your apartment search:
Review
Your Credit Reports: Property
managers and rental owners
use credit reports as a
tool to evaluate prospective
renters. You should review
your credit reports periodically
to make sure they are correct.
To obtain your free report,
contact any of these credit
reporting agencies: Equifax,
Experian or TransUnion.
Be
aware of Terms of lease:
The most standard leases
are 12 month leases. After
which point many convert
to month to month terms.
Short term leases (month-to-month)
and three month leases are
sometimes available... but
at premium rates.
Review
Fees: Many rental communities
require an application fee,
a security deposit, and
first and/or last month’s
rent up front. Make sure
you ask the leasing agent
about what is required.
Review
Your Lease Carefully: You
should understand your rights
and obligations. The terms
of a lease can often be
negotiated. In a tight rental
market, landlords are sometimes
not willing to negotiate
the terms of the lease.

should be aware of your
legal rights so you can
make an informed decision.
